Bosko Books and the environment

Re-engineering the publishing process

We aim to produce good books and at the same time lower our impact on the environment. All printing in the office is duplex (double sided) on recycled paper where possible.

A large degree of our manuscript management is based on ‘single document processes’, where the same single paper document is used for multiple tasks (proofing layout, proofing text, indexing etc.)

For printed books we primarily use print on demand (PoD) where books are printed and shipped only as they are ordered. For longer print runs our printer of choice is Butler and Tanner who have ISO 14001 accreditation for environmental management. We are also developing cd-roms and on-line delivery of content.

Our marketing, communication and ordering are based around digital methods to minimise paper waste.

The international trade in waste IT technology is starting to have a big environmental impact so we use second-user or refurbished computer equipment wherever we can do so without affecting our quality or reliability.

The company

Our offices have high-levels of insulation to reduce energy consumption.

All paper waste is recycled and all organic waste is composted.

Our electricity is supplied using SWEB’s Green Tariff service which invests in the installation of renewable generation for community based and educational projects.

All the lighting throughout our offices uses low-consumption fluorescent bulbs.

Every year 0.5 % of the companies profits are donated to an international environmental charity.
